owner since Tom's

described the clientele
-- folks from all walks
of life.

Tom's Tavern
Popular watering hole on 7 Mile Road in Detroit
The paintings here are my impressions based on
memory and a few sketches.  I started with canvases that
I had stained brown, and developed the images from
what I saw in the initial washed brushstrokes.  The
characters and perspectives, rendered differently on
each canvas, developed from the paint itself, from what I
saw in the swirls, rather than from any preconceptions or
forethought.  Faces in cloud, so to speak. That often
happens and I tend to think I am not the one painting
anymore.
