PR can help business during a downturn

Public relations - the art of creating credibility for a business'
product or service - often is among the first line items to be cut in
an economic downturn. This literally is "cutting off the nose" of an
income generator.

In times such as these, businesses need to create or maintain
positive public exposure more than ever, and unlike paid
advertising, good practitioners of PR can deliver creative
awareness and credibility builders free or at least without putting
much additional strain on the budget. The ROI can be enormous:
PR can sway a stubborn prospect, create demand, educate a
clueless public, or build up goodwill which has been proven to be
a strong "buy" factor.

PR can help best when its strategies align with that of the
business. Do you have a business plan, or even a marketing
plan? Are these documented and being implemented, or are they
sitting on a shelf? PR needs to apply its discipline according to
the direction of the company, which in today's marketplace, can
change quickly. Too often PR operates without the updated
knowledge.

Lastly, if you have not already, you should make PR a subset of
management rather than a subset of marketing. By elevating the
report structure, the PR director can better manage the reputation
and public view of the business, yet still deliver marketing support
through a direct line interface.
